The maison des canuts
To visit the Maison des Canuts is to experience a history that is still very much with us today. There are three exhibition rooms and a workshop to discover.
Our exhibition rooms retrace the origins of silk, the manufacture of gold and silver threads, the organization of the Fabrique, the name given to the silk industry in Lyon, and the Canuts revolts. The last room is devoted to temporary exhibitions.
Located on the Croix-Rousse plateau in Lyon, the workshop-museum presents the great history of silk-making
silk. The permanent exhibition tells the story of the origin of silk, which was discovered 4,500 years ago,
explains the silkworm cycle and the manufacture of gold and silver threads. It details the organisation of
the Lyonnais factory, the Canuts revolts of 1831 and 1834 and Jacquard’s invention.
